Let's talk about insulation, for your campervan cab windows!

We spend lots of time and money insulating our camper vans so they're cool in the Summer and warm and snug in the Autumn/Winter months, but your windows are a large area to let that heat in or out, especially the windscreen and cab area.

When thinking about what campervan window covers to buy, it's important to consider the thermal qualities as well as how great they look, and blackout properties are a must!

There are many different styles and price points available so it's vital to do your research about how they will insulate your campervan and how much they reflect the suns heat, especially with the angle of the windscreen.

This is exactly what Becki at Wanderbug has spent the last five years experimenting with to get the best combinations, and for the windscreen and cab door covers she makes, 5mm dense foam is very high quality and boasts fantastic thermal and solar radiation qualities, as shown in the image below...

Be sure to look for at least 95% radiant reflection, humidity resistant and double sided reflective barrier to reflect heat out and keep it in.

Another consideration is what the window covers are backed with - if you'd prefer to keep your camper van stealthy then avoid the 'spaceship' silver foil effect and opt for campervan window blinds which are backed with a black fabric, preferably with a waterproof fabric to avoid soaking up any condensation.

Cab Door Window Cover Pair - Tweed Grey - WanderbugUK

Combine this foam with a stylish choice of internal fabrics to compliment your van's interior and you've got a practical solution that looks great!
On the subject of condensation, although it's impossible to stop condensation completely (especially with our UK weather!), well insulated campervan window blinds can really help to reduce the condensation - with magnetic window covers that sit inside the frame cavity, the window cover sits against the window pane which is the best way to insulate the glass.
Because of the angle of the windscreen, a lot of windscreen blinds will struggle to stay upright against the glass, so using a more rigid foam, along with some strengthening rods sewn in to the blinds will help to keep them in place.

So if you're getting your campervan ready for the warmer seasons ahead, check out the specs of the window covers before you part with your cash, and make a wise investment that will do the job properly.
